I spent three years coaching one leader through a transformation. Today he was electric — his vision finally showing signs of life.
I shared his joy. And I still saw a missing bolt and nut.
His initiative had everything: strategy, buy-in, momentum. What it never had was an anchor in the one thing that makes change stick — the underserved needs of the people it was built to serve.
Years ago in Manhattan, I noticed people searching one phrase online: "study café." Not coffee. Not workspace. Belonging without a toll booth at the door. I built for that need, and a community grew where programs had failed. Capital One later built the same insight into a national retail strategy.
The lesson for any leader: don't start with what you want to offer. Start with what people are actually looking for.
Transformation without that anchor will dance beautifully — and still drift.
From my book, Dancing in the Wind: An Adaptive Leadership Framework in the Age of AI.
