For 70 years, Yellowstone tried everything to fix its dying ecosystem. Then 14 wolves did what decades of management couldn't.
Culling herds. Building fences. Relocating animals. Generation after generation of skilled biologists, every lever available. The vegetation kept declining. The rivers kept eroding.
It wasn't a failure of effort. It was a failure of category — the wrong kind of intervention, applied with increasing sophistication, to a problem that required a fundamentally different posture.
In 1995, fourteen wolves were released. The entire ecosystem transformed.
I see the same pattern in AI transformation today: bigger budgets, more tools, another task force — more force applied to a system that isn't a machine. Organizations are living systems, and living systems don't respond to scale. They respond to leverage.
